Iceland - The Land of Fire and Ice
Rachel Jordan

Brisk, wet wind blew my hair back as I ventured closer to the cascading falls before me. There’s nothing in this world that can capture the feeling of sheer power that mother nature showcases in Iceland, and as I stand before the impressive Gulfoss, I think of my journey – one day standing atop coastal cliffs watching puffins fly, to another day viewing an active volcano, to yet another day trekking Vatnajokull, the largest glacier in Europe. They always say Iceland is named the Land of Fire and Ice, and as I reminisced on my adventure, I couldn’t help but agree the title was more than well-earned. While the landscape is breathtaking, there’s quite a bit more to Iceland than meets the eye!
The way to a traveler’s heart is through the stomach…
The key to a well-balanced adventure (and diet) is great food! Going to Iceland, I never imagined that the cuisine would impress me as much as the stunning glacial and volcanic views, but I’m happy to say Iceland proved me wrong. The best food to get is a hot dog – with the works! Iceland is notoriously expensive for food, and thankfully the most affordable option is delicious! The Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur hot dog stand in downtown Reykjavik is a popular place for locals and visitors alike. Hot dogs not your thing? Head down to the fisherman’s pier to Saegreifinn – known for the best lobster bisque in Iceland. Being surrounded by ocean, Iceland has so much delicious seafood, so I promise you won’t regret a visit to the fisherman’s pier!
Culture is king
By now you’ve probably figured out that I’m a big foodie, but in Iceland, their culture (even outside of food) reigns supreme! Locals in Iceland have long-held traditions of believing in elves (In fact, 54% of Icelanders say that they believe in them). Plus, the protection of elves’ homes has created a population that respects nature and is cautious in developing on land – thinking we can all learn a little from them! Sustainability is a huge part of Icelandic culture, and throughout any adventure there you’ll find that not only the local population cares a great deal about clean energy and recycling, but that the beautiful natural features of Iceland, from glacial falls to volcanic areas, are strongly protected and valued by the people who reside there. They respect the power of the Earth and harness and protect it carefully.
To add more to this already amazing culture, the majority of Icelanders are writers and musicians – or some kind of creative – to help get them through the long, cold winters. This not only produces amazing works of art throughout the country, but it also provides the perfect opportunity for unique souvenirs – purchasing books and albums by local artists to take home to loved ones or to remember your journey.
A world of adventure
Iceland is a haven for all adventure-lovers around the world. From glacier trekking, snorkeling in the clearest water in the world between tectonic plates in 0 degree Celsius waters, snowmobiling on a glacier, hiking in anticipation of amazing waterfall views, cruising through icy glacial lagoons, and venturing out to see an abandoned US Navy plane wreckage on a black sand beach, Iceland has it all. For the adventurer who needs to unwind, soak up the warm water in over 40 natural hot springs around the small island or head over to the iconic Blue Lagoon for other-worldly views of milky-blue steaming water and enjoy a silica mud mask to relax!
