AAA Offers Safety Tips for Atmospheric Rivers
Simple preparation steps can reduce flood and storm damage
Powerful storms known as atmospheric rivers, can bring heavy rain, high winds and flash flooding to communities with little warning. AAA Insurance encourages residents to take steps now to prepare for these severe weather events and minimize their impact on homes and vehicles.
“When an atmospheric storm hits, the amount of rain that falls in a short period of time can be overwhelming,” said Chrissy Hall, VP of Insurance with AAA South Jersey. “Clearing drains, securing outdoor items, and knowing your evacuation route can make a big difference in staying safe and preventing costly damage.”
Prepare Before the Storm
- Monitor local weather alerts and be ready to act quickly.
- Clear gutters, downspouts, and storm drains to prevent overflow.
- Move vehicles to higher ground and avoid parking under trees or power lines.
- Gather an emergency kit with food, water, medications, and flashlights.
- Review your home and auto insurance to understand what is—and isn’t—covered for flood damage.
Stay Safe During the Storm
- Avoid driving through flooded streets—just one foot of water can carry away most vehicles.
- Follow all evacuation orders and stay tuned to official channels for updates.
- If sheltering in place, move to higher floors and avoid electrical equipment that could be exposed to water.
After the Storm Passes
- Stay away from standing water, downed power lines, and damaged structures.
- Document damage with photos or video before beginning cleanup.
