Road Trips Reign Supreme

While many families will set sail on cruises or fly to faraway destinations, road trips remain a top choice for summer vacations.

Nearly 8 million Americans will call on AAA during their travels this summer for flat tire repair, lockout assistance and battery replacement, among other types of services. To help prevent roadside hassles during summer adventures, AAA encourages road trip enthusiasts to follow these car care tips:

  • Check tires: Inflate tires to the recommended pressure listed in your owner’s manual or driver-side doorjamb. Use a quarter inserted upside down to check tread wear – if George Washington’s head is visible at any point, it’s time to replace your tires.
  • Brakes: Check your vehicle’s brake system for fluid leaks and wear at every oil change or when you’ve noticed grinding or scraping. If a brake warning light illuminates on your dashboard, don’t delay – visit a AAA Approved Auto Repair center for service.
  • Battery: Batteries should be tested regularly after three years to determine remaining capacity. AAA members can save time by choosing mobile battery service, which is available in all areas. A technician will come to your home or work to perform a free battery test and can install a new battery right on site if needed.
  • Fluids: Oil should be changed at intervals suggested by the vehicle manufacturer. Be sure to select an oil that meets your vehicle’s factory specifications. Brake, engine coolant, transmission and power steering fluids also should be checked.
