Local Trips You Auto Take This Summer
Whether you’re planning an extended weekend this Fourth of July, or simply looking for a local day trip, New Jersey’s National Park Service Sites offer a diverse range of fun options. From trails and mountains to waterfalls and forests, make it a point this summer to explore these must-visit National Park Service Sites that are in your backyard:
The Appalachian Trail
The Appalachian Trail runs from Maine to Georgia, but did you know 72 miles of its vast beauty runs through New Jersey? Plan your trek and sightsee the Kittatinny Mountains, historical landscapes, and diverse wildlife. If you’re interested in a longer trip, the Trail even offers camping at designated sites, too.
Ellis Island
Chances are you’ve driven past, but have you ever visited Ellis Island? Discover all the history Ellis Island offers; you can spend a day at the museum exploring photos and relics, marvel over the scenic views, and search passenger arrival records from decades’ past (you may even locate your own family’s history if they passed through the port!).
New Jersey Pinelands
Spanning across seven counties, the New Jersey Pinelands is a state icon. Depending on preference, you can experience your adventure by bike, hike, or car—and visit historic sites like Allaire Village or Whitesbog Village along the way. Or, you can explore by renting a canoe or kayak at Batsto River at Quaker Bridge. And, if you keep your eyes peeled, you may even spot the legendary Jersey Devil!
Paterson Great Falls
The Great Falls of the Passaic River is an industrial historic site located in Paterson, the first planned industrial city. Visitors can experience the park’s waterfalls, ancient geology, and history by way of trails, footbridges, and observation decks. To make the most of your trip, the Park offers guided tours and self-guided tours, as well as access to the nearby Paterson Museum.
Thomas Edison National Historical Park
When you think “national park,” pulleys, sound recordings, and phonographs probably don’t come to mind, but the laboratories and libraries of Thomas Edison don’t disappoint. The complex presents an in-depth look at the work of America’s greatest inventor and a lesson on early modern technology. Edison’s nearby family estate, Glenmont, can be toured as well.
